Key Stage One

Class Teacher: Miss Hodgkins

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Driscoll

This term we will be focusing mainly on non-fiction writing. We will write a report on our progress and experiences so far this year, explanation texts on the importance of Fair Trade and instructions based around recipes. In addition, we will explore the features of these types of writing and look at structure and SPaG as we go. Next half term, we will continue with recipe writing and begin writing our own stories inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, This will be our key text this term.

Please encourage your children when writing at home to use their best handwriting and good spelling, punctuation and grammar to ensure we are always practicing these skills whenever we write.

All children in Key Stage One complete a daily reading session after lunch, where activities vary according to our needs. Some of these activities are, for example, listening to an audio book, silent reading or reading comprehension.

Thanks to our very valuable volunteer readers, we aim for all children to be heard read every day where possible. Please can you ensure your child brings their reading diary into school every day, so we can record in it when we read with them at school.

This term, we will be revising the different operations we have learnt this year in preparation for our SATs test for Year 2. We will be focusing on drawing our working out and problem solving as this will help us too. After half term, we will move on to a wider range of practical maths and finish with timestables and fractions.

Our Science this term looks closely at plants and their needs. We will be finding out about the different parts of plants and how we can keep them healthy. We will be doing the majority of this practically and through forest school. Keep an eye out for our plants in the playground!

Our topic this term is Chocolate!. Throughout the next 12 weeks, we will be discovering where chocolate comes from and how it is made. Our book focus, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will guide our english and art sessions. We will be having a very special Chocolatier visit us to show us how to make chocolate sculptures! We are also very excitied to learn about Australia, in honor of Mr Pappas, who will be sharing lots of insider details and facts with us! Towards the end of the year, we are planning an exhibition to showcase all of our fantastic work from this topic. We hope to see you there!

Physical Education (PE)

Key Stage One will be having P.E on Friday afternoons with Mr Pappas, swimming on Wednesday afternoons and Forest School Thursday afternoons with Mrs Field. Children who are not attending Forest School will still require a PE kit on these days as School activities will vary. Please make sure your child brings their P.E kit and Forest School kit into school especially on these days, but it is also helpful to have them the rest of the week, in case we do any extra unexpected P.E!

Religious Education (RE)

Key Stage One will be learning about celebrations this term. We will begin with looking at how and why we celebrate things, move on to Judaism and Rosh Hashanah and finally Easter.

We follow the Letter Join handwriting scheme. For more information about this and about what your child will be learning throughout the year follow the link below. You will also find detail of how to log in and practice this at home. Handwriting is a very important skill so any practice at home would be greatly appreciated!

Homework is communicated via the homework folders. There will be tasks as necessary and the hand in dates for these will be clearly communicated on these sheets, as well as Parent Mailed where possible.

Helping Your Child at Home

Please read daily with your child and help them to practice their spellings daily. Make homework fun by completing activities together. Try to help your child to become independent in organising themselves for school. Most importantly talk to your children about what they are learning and how they are learning in class.
